Yuck ‘n Yum will be hosting our mobile Karaoke Unit at the Meadow Mill Wasps studio’s reopening this weekend. We will be there all weekend with LIVE Karaoke 5 til 9 on Saturday the 26th of May.

Open Studios Sat and Sun, 12-5pm
Many artists will be opening their studio doors to the public between 12-5pm on both days. For details of artists based at Meadow Mill, please click here. There will also be a number of invited guests taking part including Yuck n’ Yum, Generator Projects, a collective of 3rd year students from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and photographer Ross Fraser McLean.

Artists Ask Exhibition, Sat 12-9pm Sun 12-5pm
This is the perfect opportunity to showcase our new gallery and project space. For the launch event, studio artists have borrowed works and artefacts from guest artists, writers and performers. Artists’ studio practices can often be solitary. However, outside of the studios, the artists are a part of many different kinds of artistic communities and wider networks.
Artists Ask creates a platform to reinvigorate and reinforce the relationships that Meadow Mill artists have with the wider world.

You may recall at the beginning of the year we announced that Val Norris and Michael Lacey were the two artists selected for our guest zine project. Well over the last few months Val and Michael have been busy beavering away and the time is almost upon us to unleash their endeavours into the world. Before we do we thought we would whet your appetite with some tasty pages courtesy of Michael Lacey.

OOH YUM! Michael’s zine entitled ‘Innards’ will be launching soon in Glasgow. We’ll keep you updated through the usual channels.

Make a karaoke video oh

Yes, it’s that time again! Time to dig out your video camera, borrow a friend’s, or use your iPhone… well what else do you do with it? Make phone calls?

You’ve got a karaoke video to make, pal!

Instead of holding a boring AGM, Yuck ‘n Yum decided to heck with professionalism and held an AGK instead! The first two Annual General Karaokes have been leading up to this! It’s simple: a karaoke night where all the karaoke videos are made by you!
Some of you will want to make a beautiful video and perform with it yourself – others might have hi-concept ideas, direct the video and choreograph a team of performers around it. Some will be shy and just want to make a video that is so tremendous it will have the audience fighting over the right to sing it. This years event will be held in Chambers East on Saturday 29th of September but we need your video by Aug 31st.

The Zine Fair is happening now! Come to Chambers East, Dundee.

So you have heard who is gonna be there, now do you wanna hear how we are going to entertain you?

Well, as you know the fair kicks off at 11am. So we thought to ease you into the day we’d play some great beats to browse books to and who have we got cueing up the tracks? None other than 2011 cover artist Ross Hamilton Frew. Expect some electronica Floating Points, Boards of Canada, Nico Jaar, some post disco stuff like Arthur Russell and of course YNYs favourite just now Shangaan Electro featuring the Tshetsha boys and Zinja Hlungwani. EPIC.

From 1pm we will have Dutch visual artist Sybren Renema playing his sax, reading from his latest book and tinkering around with his laptop.
Then at 2:30 we will be hosting a talk about why we should self publish with &Labels and Ross Christie from the Superclub. This discussion is open to all and we welcome anyone to join.

Finally if you thought we were spoiling you too much we have a little surprise lined up from one of our stall holders which will happen from 3:30. oooooh exciting…

This is a FREE event to launch our new Spring edition, however it would be nice if you bought some zines whilst you were there.

One last thing, where are you gonna be on Saturday between 11 and 4?
Yup that’s right at Chambers East hanging out with us. OH YES!

Here at YNY HQ we are counting down the days with excitement because not only does our new issue launch on Saturday but we will also be hosting Dundee’s first zine fair. HOORAH. So wanna know who is coming and what we have lined up? Well look no further as we have comprised a wee list of all the stall holders plus a little info on what each stall will be selling straight from the horses mouth. So dun dun dun……. the stallholders are

Paul Milne will be selling Guts Power
Guts Power is a comic by Paul Jon Milne that is about muscles and sentient gases, unemployment and crossdressing, in a futuristic Scotland set in the near past.
 

Norman Gubra will be selling wee books of poetry, pictures and nonsense.

UniVerse will be selling Anthology One
Anthology One, is the first issue, and features work from the students on Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design’s (DJCAD) Comic Art and Graphic Novels Module. Module Leader Phillip Vaughan said, “We have created an imprint called UniVerse to promote and publish up and coming work from the next generation of comic creators! This is the best of the work from the first cohort of the module, which (staggeringly!) was run over 12 weeks for one day a week during Semester 1 of Communication Design Level 3 (encompassing Animation, Graphic Design and Illustration undergraduates). This year we plan to roll the module out to other undergraduate areas of the art college. We hope you will be as impressed with the diverse and professional results as we are!”

Superclub have selected some of their favourite publications including comics by Malcy Duff, John Porcellino and Joakim Ojanen; zines by Nazi Knife, B.L.A.D. and Retard Riot and artist books by Lachlann Rattray, Matthew Swan, Ross Christie and C.F.

Team Girl is a collective of all-female comics creators, covering all ages and backgrounds. Based in Glasgow, they aim to contribute to the increasing presence of women and girls in the indie comic scene, producing work that is original and entertaining. But mostly, they just want to have fun making comics! The latest issue of Team Girl and other paraphernalia will be available to buy at the fair.

Zug
ZUG ZUG ZUG ZUG
ZUG ZUG ZUG ZUG ZUG 

A drag of a fag. A swig of a drink, a move in a game, is an ignorant translation of a word more commonly thought of as meaning train. When I found however, that hiding behind the Germans big-fast, national toy, was a tiny wee word that translated exactly everything that constitutes my life, I kind of understood the 42 thing about the universe. Perfect, a word that sounds like something out of Donald Duck. KABOOM.

BANG….ZUG The Guttural, commander of my universe. And so in that high speed sweeping under the carpet of the train, I got a grip on my anxiety, I gave name to my existential boredom, and that name was ZUG.

ZUG the great and terrible, but mainly pretty pathetic. Rejoicing in my newly named boredom I saw that the smoke exhaled from my cigarette, the booze stained air round my head, the space frozen with concentration between my own hand of cards and my opponents was not just wasted time. Not just ways of using up seconds till I die, they’re ZUG!!!

ZUG heavily on this ‘zine, if you find yourself smoking, drinking, playing or making doodles on your fone-book, realize you are not alone in your boredom and share that realization with us. 

Satellite Zine plus transatlantic hook up
The Satellite Zine is a DJCAD publication aimed at talking about things going on around Dundee and the University. There are articles, showcases, comix, and other fine things in this free publication. We will have our new Issue 6 ‘The Seen’ along with our back issues.
The Satellite Zine held a one-page zine making workshop at the end of February to introduce people to how easy and fun making a zine can be. We will have the 9 zines made that evening available.
We also have work from American zinesters. Anna Thoreau will have her latest zine. You can find her work here.
Dan  McCloskey, founder of the Cyberpunk Apocalypse Writer Residency program, will also be contributing.

Before Saw Dust
The structuralists are randomly invading the periphery but it’s mostly still spontaneous… an ongoing collective zine put together by MFA students at the ECA. Jo Priestley will be manning the stall who hails from Australia and makes zines.

Welcome to the weird and wonderful world of Whimsical Lush! Toadstools, castles, rabbits, woolly creatures, prints, cards, mugs, stickers, t-shirts and much more… Check it out!!

The Glad Rag
The Glad Rag is the literary arm of the Glad Cafe project. The Glad Cafe dream is to establish an Arts Hub on the South Side of Glasgow, based in a cafe bar venue. For some years now the South Side has been burgeoning with artistic talent: musicians, writers, dancers, sculptors and artists of all kinds. The Glad Cafe wants to provide a space where people can come together in and across different spheres of activity, philosophies, cultures and age groups to share ideas and to foster and showcase creativity.
With this in mind, the production of a zine to feature contemporary writing and artwork seemed an obvious development. The spread of work offered within demonstrates the belief that we are immersed in an artistic community that should be valued and celebrated.

SCREE
an arts+writing little magazine based in Edinburgh. The magazine is inspired by the tradition of hand-made poetry magazines from the late 1950s/early 1960s such as Migrant and Poor.Old.Tired.Horse. Each issue is typed on the typewriter, and is
manually assembled with scissors, glue, and much time next to a photocopier. SCREE comes with a supplementary music cd.

Descent by Stuart McAdam and Neil Scott
Two artists follow a river from source to sea.  This book documents the journey travelled by foot and canoe along the Rivers Isla and Tay in Scotland.

Val Norris
Val has made a new comic entitled My Funny Valentine or Chet Baker Made Me Late for Work’ for the zine fair . This is a precursor to her Guest Zine project which she is producing in conjunction with YNY and will be launching later in the year.

So, what are you up to on Saturday 24th March? If that’s nothing, then good. If you’ve already got plans, then change ‘em. Because something very big is coming to Dundee. No wait, something VERY BIG is coming to Dundee… there, that’s better.

What’s coming is the Yuck ‘n Yum 2012 Dundee Zine Fair, an all day festival to celebrate the thriving scene of self publishing across Scotland and the world beyond. At Dundee’s City Chambers from 11am to 4pm we’ll have an array of tables for all you crazy zinesters to pitch up and offer the world your wares. A 3-foot wide table space can be hired for £5, and whatever type of zine you got, we wanna see it. For further info, email gayle@yucknyum.org and your queries will be answered. Space is limited, so don’t dilly dally!

PS oh yeah the spring 2012 issue of Yuck ‘n Yum will be launched at the event too. Send us art, you know you want to.

Yuck ‘n Yum are delighted to announce that our new cover artist for 2012 is Helen Flanagan.

Helen is a photographer based in Birmingham, returning there after graduating from Falmouth University of Arts in 2010. Her photography captures human fragility with a delicacy in framing and slightest of touch. She has exhibited across the UK and has been featured in multiple photographic publications including Dazed and Confused magazine. She is also cofounder of Books & Others, a project aimed at promoting photographic works, with visual artist Alex Bailey. 

We at Yuck ‘n Yum are very excited to have Helen as our first photographic cover artist and are curious to see what direction Helen takes YNY in 2012. Helen has been featured twice in Yuck ‘n Yum in our summer and winter editions of 2011. You can view these works amongst others by heading to our zine archive.
